Sweden's election remains open after three-seat margin

Sweden's preliminary parliamentary result remains unsettled after a three-seat margin emerged on Monday morning, with 28,800 votes separating the two sides.

The opposition parties held 176 seats and the Tidö parties 173 when about 94% of the votes had been counted, according to SVT. The figures remain preliminary.

More than 3.6 million voters cast ballots early, a record. Jany Plevnik at the Election Authority told SVT that officials will not know how many votes remain for Wednesday until they are counted. Around 224,000 were included in the equivalent late count in 2022.

The Election Authority says county administrative boards began the final count on Monday. Every paper ballot is checked, and registrations can be corrected.

On Wednesday, municipalities will add late early votes and overseas ballots to the preliminary count. The authority expects to establish the final Riksdag result in about a week. Until then, the remaining paper count can still change the balance.
