Sweden’s citizenship language test faces delay

Applicants who must prove their Swedish may need to rely on school grades or another accepted test while the new citizenship language exam awaits a government decision. The language requirement remains in place.
The Swedish Council for Higher Education has recommended postponing the new exam. The government will decide when it can begin, the Swedish Migration Agency says.
For applicants covered by the language requirement, existing qualifications offer other routes. These include qualifying grades in Swedish or Swedish as a second language from school, adult education or folk high school, and a passing grade in the highest SFI course.
A Tisus result can also be used. The agency says other language tests may qualify if they establish functional Swedish with a high degree of certainty.
The proposed delay does not affect the test on Swedish society. Citizenship applications will continue to be processed under the current rules, and the agency will contact applicants if it needs further documents.
