Left and Green parties want abortion law to name all pregnant people

The Left and Green parties want Sweden's proposed abortion law to say explicitly that the right applies to everyone who is pregnant. The Social Democrats and Centre Party back the government's wording, which refers to a ‘woman who is pregnant’.

The four parties could work together in the newly elected Parliament, but Sveriges Radio reported on Thursday that they disagree over the bill's language. A Left Party motion filed in June asks the government to use the wording ‘woman or the person who is pregnant’ throughout the provisions governing the right to abortion.

The government's wider bill would also allow medical abortions at home and expand the role of midwives. Parliament is still considering the bill and related motions; it has not voted on the proposed wording.
