The Sweden Democrats want parliament to extend Sweden’s temporary fuel-tax reductions as the first part of the relief expires on 1 October. The party is seeking parliamentary support while talks on a new government continue.

Party leader Jimmie Åkesson announced the planned committee initiative at a press conference, SVT reports. He argued that the international situation behind the reductions had not changed.

The temporary cuts have two expiry dates: 1 October and 1 December. They were introduced to offset the effect of rising world oil prices.

The party plans to raise its proposal at the Finance Committee’s first meeting, expected on Tuesday 6 October. That timetable means its announcement does not itself extend the tax relief.

An extension still needs parliamentary support. For drivers, the distinction matters: a party’s demand to keep taxes lower is not a decision that has already changed the rates.
