S wants 10% cap on adults’ dental treatment bills

The Social Democrats want adults to pay no more than 10% of the price of dental treatments, in an election pledge they say would be phased in over several years.

Under the party’s proposal, a treatment priced at SEK 5,000 would cost the patient SEK 500. S also wants to restore free dental care for people aged 19 to 23.

The package, including more places in dental education, would cost about SEK 6 billion a year, according to independent reporting. It is not law. S has not specified which treatments would qualify, whether the cap would use state reference prices, how the stages would work or when all adults would be covered.

The party also proposes reserved training places for applicants from areas with dentist shortages, a role for private clinics in introducing newly trained dentists, a review of where practices may open and tougher action against fraud and overbilling.

Under current rules, people aged 67 or older pay 10% of the reference price, or a lower provider price, for certain treatments. The special support does not cover every procedure.

The Sweden Democrats announced a similar all-adult pledge earlier this year and called the S plan a copy. S says free care for 19-to-23-year-olds is a key difference. The Left Party has separately proposed a SEK 1,200 annual ceiling and free care through age 23.
