Sweden’s four opposition parties reject the Sweden Democrats’ proposal to make some Swedish citizens eligible for the return grant. SD wants naturalised citizens to be able to apply if they relinquish their citizenship and leave Sweden.
Sveriges Radio reported the parties’ positions on 14 July after asking the Social Democrats, Centre Party, Green Party and Left Party about the proposal. The broadcaster said 617 people had applied under the existing rules, with 137 approved and 250 rejected.
Under the Migration Agency’s rules, no Swedish citizen can receive the grant, whether citizenship was held from birth or acquired later. Applicants must live in Sweden with a valid residence permit granted by 12 September 2024 on listed protection or humanitarian grounds.
The grant pays SEK 350,000 per adult and SEK 25,000 per child, capped at SEK 500,000 for a couple and SEK 600,000 for a household.
People moving to the EU, EEA or Switzerland are excluded, as are applicants with certain unpaid public debts or criminal cases. The Migration Agency can demand repayment if a recipient does not leave within 12 months or later moves back to Sweden.
