Private wells face shortages as Västmanland groundwater stays low

Private wells in Västmanland could run dry as low groundwater persists across the county, while households on municipal networks are being urged to conserve water.

The active SMHI notice says groundwater is low and flows in the Svartån river are reduced. It advises municipal customers to watch for local restrictions, while people with private or shared wells should limit use because both capacity and water quality may deteriorate.

SVT reports that the shortage mainly affects private wells, although municipalities are also asking residents to avoid unnecessary watering. Well owners are advised to test their water because low levels can increase concentrations of unwanted substances and the risk of bacterial growth.

Västmanland's county administration is preparing a regional water-supply plan. SMHI has not set an end time for the shortage notice.
