Örebro massacre: new book challenges police conclusions on racism

Police found no evidence of a racist motive for the Örebro school massacre. A new book says they left digital leads unexplored before reaching that conclusion.
Rickard Andersson murdered ten people at Campus Risbergska, an adult-education centre, on 4 February 2025 before killing himself.
Mattias Beijmo’s R – Massmordet på Risbergska says police left Telegram and Rumble accounts unexamined and did not attempt to decrypt files sent shortly before the attack, according to SVT.
Beijmo also highlights a bookmarked far-right publication and the school’s many students with foreign backgrounds. He does not claim a racist motive is proved, TT reports.
Police explicitly kept racism open on 9 February. By May, they attributed the attack to suicidal intent and frustration.
Police said the victims broadly reflected the school’s students and staff. That addresses selection inside the building; it does not settle why Andersson chose the school in the first place.
Responding to the book on 2 October, police official Henrik Dahlström told SVT he lacked detailed knowledge of every inquiry but trusted available investigative opportunities had been used.
“We choose to use the facts, and we choose not to use hypotheses about what we might find,” he said.
The police’s own January 2026 review records friction when commanders sought rapid answers about a possible xenophobic motive. Investigators struggled to meet their timetable.
Police say the investigation closed because the sole suspect was dead. Beijmo wants it reopened to pursue the unanswered questions.
