Nine in ten students study where housing falls short at term start

Nearly nine in ten students study in places where housing falls short of SFS’s standard for a safe home by the start of the autumn term.

The 2026 survey covers 34 study locations and 294,923 campus students. Only 31,518 are in green locations. More than half are in yellow locations, which expect to offer a first-hand contract sometime during autumn but need not meet SFS’s rent or campus-distance rules. Another 113,798 are in red locations that cannot offer housing during autumn.

Green status requires a permanent first-hand contract for the full study period, within 30 minutes of campus, for students taking at least 15 credits a term. SFS sets reasonable rent at about SEK 4,100 a month, or SEK 4,900 with ten-month rent, and requires access within 30 days or by term start.

The map is an estimate based on data from student unions and housing providers, not a guarantee. Halmstad moved from red to yellow, while Stockholm, Gothenburg, Kiruna, Visby and Alnarp remain red.
