Left Party insists on cabinet role in government talks

The Left Party says it must be part of the cabinet in a government it supports, setting out a condition for the post-election negotiations.

Deputy leader Ida Gabrielsson told SVT’s Aktuellt on Wednesday evening, 16 September, that supporting a government from outside the cabinet in exchange for policy concessions was not an option. Her statement reaffirmed the party’s demand for direct participation in government.

Under Sweden’s government-formation rules, the Speaker proposes a prime minister and the Riksdag votes on the nomination. A proposal is approved unless at least 175 members vote against it.

The appointed prime minister chooses the ministers and informs the Riksdag of their names. Cabinet appointments therefore come through the government-formation process, rather than directly from the election count.
