Left Party backs Norlén for another term as Speaker

Andreas Norlén has secured the Left Party’s support ahead of Monday’s Speaker election, giving him majority backing in the Riksdag. The decision separates the choice of Speaker from the unresolved negotiations over Sweden’s next government.

Deputy party leader Ida Gabrielsson told SVT’s Agenda that a potentially lengthy government-formation process made parliamentary stability important. She cited Norlén’s experience and ability to remain calm and objective.

The Social Democrats want a Speaker from their own party, but the red-green parties had not presented a joint candidate by late Sunday.

Gabrielsson said the Left Party still wanted to form a government with the Social Democrats and would support only Magdalena Andersson as prime minister.

The Speaker vote follows Monday’s parliamentary roll call, which begins at 11am.
