Jomshof made the remark in an interview with Dagens Nyheter. Responding to SVT, Kristersson distinguished religion from Islamism.

"Freedom of religion is fundamental in Sweden," he said. Kristersson added that authorities should be tough on political Islam that seeks to place itself above the law.

He called Jomshof's statement stupid and said the SD politician was sabotaging the election campaign by diverting attention from the differences between the governing and opposition blocs.

Asked whether the comments disqualified Jomshof from serving as a minister, Kristersson did not answer directly.
