Jimmie Åkesson still wants existing permanent residence permits revoked

Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson says revoking existing permanent residence permits is one of the migration-policy changes his party still wants Sweden to carry out.

The proposal Åkesson is backing would revoke certain permanent permits granted on asylum-related grounds and replace them with temporary permits where the person still qualifies. It is separate from the law that took effect on 12 July, which ended access to new permanent permits for several protection-related groups.

Åkesson described the change in Tuesday’s P1 Morgon party-leader interview as one of the migration-policy measures SD still wants carried out. The interview was broadcast at 07:15.

The 2025 government inquiry covers refugees, people with subsidiary protection, quota refugees, long-term residents, some people granted permits on exceptional or enforcement grounds, and certain family members. It proposes exceptions linked to citizenship applications and exceptional circumstances.

The plan has not been enacted. The Liberals say already-granted permits should not be revoked, while Sveriges Radio reported that other governing parties also wanted the inquiry reworked. For people holding permits based on work or EU law, the proposal does not apply.
