A father let his 13-year-old ride an e-scooter he knew was too fast. His conviction is part of an approach police in eastern Sweden say they will use more often to hold parents responsible.

SVT Sörmland reports that police stopped the boy in Eskilstuna during the summer. The scooter exceeded 20 kilometres an hour and, because of its speed and motor power, was classed as a moped.

The father admitted allowing his son to ride it and knowing it was too fast, but said he had not intended to commit an offence. The court imposed 30 day-fines totalling 10,500 kronor.

Police officer Björn Thunblad says the approach is intended to reach parents when children under 15 ride these vehicles. Police in the eastern region expect more such judgments as they work to reduce accidents.

The case turns on the vehicle’s classification and the adult’s responsibility, not simply on a child being seen with an ordinary e-scooter.
