Foreign workers renewing permits for accompanying family members must now show they can cover the family’s living costs again. Unemployment benefits and income from subsidised jobs will not count.

The change took effect on 1 October, according to the Swedish Migration Agency. Previously, the maintenance check for accompanying family members was made when they first applied. It now also applies at renewal.

The amount a household needs depends on its size and housing costs. A family member’s income may count towards it, subject to the restrictions on eligible income.

There is a separate change for relatives accompanying holders of an ICT permit or an EU Blue Card: a stay of up to one year now requires comprehensive health insurance covering care in Sweden.

Maintenance requirements also extend to families of researchers and certain former researchers, including at renewal. The agency’s notice sets out the rules for each permit category.
