EU opens free travel passes to young residents in Sweden

Young people living in Sweden who were born in 2008 can apply for a free DiscoverEU travel pass until noon on 15 October. The eligibility rules include residents as well as citizens, while accommodation and most other travel expenses remain the traveller’s responsibility.
The EU application round opened on 1 October. Applicants must have been born between 1 January and 31 December 2008 and be citizens or residents of an eligible country, including Sweden.
Applicants enter an identity-card, passport or residence-permit number and answer five quiz questions plus a tie-breaker. Applying does not guarantee a pass. The deadline is noon Stockholm time on 15 October 2026.
Successful applicants can travel between 1 March 2027 and 31 May 2028. The flexible pass allows seven train-travel days within a one-month period, with travel normally in second class.
The award covers the pass rather than a fully paid holiday. Travellers must budget for accommodation, food and insurance, along with costs outside the programme’s reservation allowance. MUCF’s separate inclusion programme supports organisations working with young people facing barriers; it has its own application process.
