Centre Party wants Kristersson to try forming a government

The Centre Party wants Ulf Kristersson to get the next chance to form Sweden’s government. Its conditions for a coalition remain unchanged.

Leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist told Speaker Andreas Norlén on Wednesday that the Moderate leader should receive the exploratory mandate as leader of parliament’s second-largest party, SVT reported.

She again ruled out governing with either the Left Party or the Sweden Democrats. She said Centre respected the Left’s voters and parliamentary seats, but that this did not automatically entitle the party to cabinet posts.

Her request concerns who should test the possibilities for a government. Centre has not announced an agreement to put Kristersson in office.

The distinction matters under Sweden’s rules: an exploratory mandate gives a leader time to seek support. Becoming prime minister requires a separate parliamentary vote, in which a nominee must avoid 175 votes against them.

Kristersson’s caretaker government continues in office while the Speaker works towards a successor.
