Centre leader gets a week to explore a new Swedish government

Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist has until 26 October to report whether she can find support for a new Swedish government. Speaker Andreas Norlén handed her the task on Monday, after parliament rejected Magdalena Andersson as prime minister last week.
The Speaker’s mandate is to explore a government that parliament would tolerate. It does not nominate Thand Ringqvist as prime minister or establish that a coalition has been agreed.
Thand Ringqvist says she will invite every party leader to talks. Her aim is to help resolve the deadlock, rather than become prime minister herself, according to the Centre Party.
She sees Andersson, leader of the largest party, as the most likely prime minister in the centre government she envisages. Jobs, lower emissions and stronger welfare are her party’s stated priorities.
The deadline sets the next checkpoint in government formation. It does not guarantee that a government will be ready by then.
