Asylum-seeking children covered by Sweden’s school-admission provision should normally be offered a place within two months of their application for international protection under an amended rule taking effect on 1 October.

The amended school regulation says children must be admitted as soon as appropriate, taking their personal circumstances into account. It adds that this should happen no later than two months after the protection application was submitted.

The wording distinguishes an obligation to admit children as soon as appropriate from the two-month target. It does not make every child wait two months before starting school.

The change concerns admission under the existing provision for children covered by chapter 29, section 2, second paragraph, point 1 of the Education Act. The government issued the amendment on 11 June, and it was published on 16 June.
