Magdalena Andersson says the Social Democrats would refuse to negotiate with a new Swedish government dependent on the Sweden Democrats, warning Centre that joining such an administration would break its election promise.

The Social Democratic leader set out her position on Sunday in an Instagram statement reported by Sveriges Radio. A right-wing government whose survival required SD support would amount to another Tidö government, she said. Her party would enter full opposition and take no part in negotiations with it.

Her warning concerns a possible government of the Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals and Centre. It challenges the idea that keeping the Sweden Democrats outside the cabinet would remove dependence on them.

Centre requested competing proposals from Andersson and Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson on Friday, asking each to explain their policies, cooperating parties and route to parliamentary support.

The party says its election commitments still stand, including opposition to a government cooperating with SD and to Left Party ministers. It also says Andersson was its most likely prime-ministerial candidate, while leaving open cooperation with several other parties.

Centre has asked Kristersson to explain how he would stop SD dictating terms, and Andersson to show how a government could function without Left Party ministers. Andersson’s answer now draws a firm line around cooperation with an SD-dependent alternative.
