Andersson given mandate to explore forming Sweden’s next government

Magdalena Andersson has been asked to explore forming Sweden’s next government, as Speaker Andreas Norlén handed the Social Democrat leader an exploratory mandate on Friday.

Norlén made the decision after meeting representatives of the parliamentary parties and consulting the deputy speakers, the Riksdag announced on 18 September.

Andersson will report back to the Speaker of the newly elected parliament, who will then announce the next steps in forming a government.

The assignment, known in Swedish as a sonderingsuppdrag, gives her the task of exploring parliamentary support for a government. It does not appoint her prime minister or settle which parties would join a cabinet.

Ulf Kristersson and his ministers remain in office as a caretaker government following his resignation request on 17 September. They will continue until a successor government takes office.

A prime minister still needs to pass a parliamentary vote. Under Sweden’s rules, the Speaker’s nominee is approved unless at least 175 MPs vote against the proposal.
