Andersson says she can form a government as talks continue

Magdalena Andersson says she believes she can form Sweden’s next government, as talks with other party leaders begin to show where further negotiations could lead.

In her first public comments since receiving an exploratory mandate on Friday, the Social Democrat leader described good discussions with several party leaders, Sveriges Radio reports.

Andersson would not identify the parties involved. She said it had become clearer which parties were worth continuing discussions with, but announced no agreement on a government.

Speaker Andreas Norlén gave her the exploratory mandate on 18 September after consulting the parliamentary parties and deputy speakers. The assignment is to explore support for a government, rather than appoint a prime minister.

Ulf Kristersson and his ministers remain in office as a caretaker government until a successor takes over.
