People prescribed Amimox liquid antibiotic at 100 mg/ml may need a prescription for an alternative as a shortage is expected from 15 October. Pharmacies cannot automatically swap it for the alternatives listed by Sweden’s Medical Products Agency.

The agency’s notice, published on 2 October, forecasts that the 60 ml pack will be unavailable until 28 February 2027 and the 125 ml pack until 5 January 2027. Those forecasts can change.

Amoxicillin Sandoz and Amoxicillin Ebb suspensions contain the same active substance at the same strength, but differ from Amimox in flavour, volume and other ingredients. Amimox contains sucrose; both alternatives contain aspartame.

A prescription must name an alternative product before the pharmacy can dispense it. The agency directs prescribers to FASS’s pharmacy-stock service to check availability.

Its shortage database is updated daily, so the forecast dates should be checked again when a prescription is needed.
