Mohamed Ali says he will keep his seat in Sweden’s parliament, with the Left Party standing behind him as scrutiny of his election campaign and finances continues.

In his first interview with SVT on Thursday, the newly elected MP from Borlänge said his voters wanted him to represent them. He said he had not been formally notified of any criminal suspicion.

Circumstances surrounding his campaign are being investigated for suspected electoral interference. Ali welcomed the investigation and defended his campaigning, describing visits to voters and door-knocking in several Dalarna municipalities.

The party’s parliamentary group leader told SVT it continued to back Ali, arguing that people with difficult pasts should have the opportunity to show they can change.

Ali also said he intended to repay his debts. SVT reported that both he and a creditor had requested a review of his debt restructuring following his election and new income.
