The Swedish healthcare system has several entry points. For advice, 1177 is often the first stop. For ongoing or non-urgent medical problems, a local care centre is usually the right place to contact. For emergencies, emergency care is there for situations that cannot wait.

The difference matters because arriving through the wrong doorway can mean a long wait or a referral back to the beginning. When you are unsure, describe your symptoms clearly and ask where you should go next.

Keep your identity documents, address and any medication list available when contacting care. If Swedish is difficult, say so early and ask what language support is possible.

In urgent situations, do not spend time trying to solve the system perfectly. Get help first.
